LANGKAWI: A car parked at the Oriental Village parking area near the Telaga Tujuh waterfalls here was badly damaged after it was swept away into a river during a water column incident at noon today.
The 12.50pm incident also left several cars damaged after the area was hit by a 0.5-meter-deep flash flood.
Langkawi police chief Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari said the incident is believed to have been triggered by heavy rainfall this morning.
"Based on preliminary investigations, five kiosks, eight food court stalls, five clothing outlets and two cafés belonging to Panorama Langkawi Sdn Bhd were affected.
"One car was swept into the river while several other vehicles were also damaged. As of 5pm, we have not received any police reports over the incident," he said in a statement.
Shariman said no injuries were reported in the incident and that a full report on the damage to properties and vehicles is underway.
"Police have blocked the entrance to the location until the floods subside," he said.
Meanwhile, Langkawi Civil Defence Force officer Khairul Afzan Md Yasin said the situation has returned to normal after the rain stopped at 2.40pm.
He reminded visitors to the area to take precautionary steps and to monitor the river level to prevent untoward incidents.
