KUALA LUMPUR: Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has reminded his party members to not use the party's victory in the Nenggiri by-election as a benchmark to win the Mahkota state seat.
In his winding-up speech at the 2024 Umno General Assembly, Mohamad, who is also Foreign Minister, said the situation in both states is different and Umno requires a different strategy to win in Mahkota.
"Just because we won by a 5,000 majority vote in Nenggiri, it does not mean we will win in Mahkota. It is a different field and a different game.
"(Hence,) everyone should go to the ground to help and work and not merely be a 'tourist' for politics.
"Help and ensure we can also maintain the victory in the Mahkota state seat," he said.
Present were Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, vice-presidents Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, and secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, among other leaders.
Previously, Umno's Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, won the Nenggiri state seat after garnering 9,091 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional's Rizwadi Ismail, who received 5,739 votes.
The Barisan Nasional's candidate led with a majority of 3,352 votes, more than three times the majority secured in the state elections in August last year.
Meanwhile, Mohamad also reminded party members who are elected representatives to regularly engage with the public and grassroots members who have supported them in their respective constituencies.
Mohamad said this was because it is not difficult to win the hearts of the Malays if their support towards the party is being appreciated.
"Once you have won, take care of your constituency. Go to the ground, meet them and thank them so that we are remembered.
"It is not difficult to win the hearts of the Malays, but it is difficult if they have grown tired of you. (Hence,) do not give them a reason to be fed up," he said.
