KUALA LUMPUR: The Cyber Security Act 2024, passed by the Dewan Rakyat in April, has officially come into force today.
The Prime Minister's Office, in a statement today, said the Act was approved by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on June 18.
"In accordance with subsection 1(2) of the Act, the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) as the minister responsible for cybersecurity, has designated Aug 26 as the date the Act comes into effect.
"The Act was approved by the King on June 18 and was published in the gazette on June 26," the statement read.
In April, the Act, aimed at enhancing the nation's cyber security through compliance with specific measures, standards and processes in managing cyber security threats, received the Dewan Rakyat nod.
The Act will also assist the government in ensuring the viability and efficiency of the National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII) in handling cyber security incidents.
The 11 NCII sectors are government; banking and finance; transportation; defence and national security; Information, communication and digital; healthcare services; water; sewerage and waste management; energy, agriculture and plantation; trade, industry and economy as well as science, technology and innovation.
Meanwhile, the Act will also see four regulations, which are the Compounding of Offences; Notification on Cyber Security Incidents; Risk Assessment and Audit; and Licensing of Cyber Security Service Providers.
