Ex-deputy minister files police report, denies human trafficking involvement

KUALA LUMPUR: Former deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim has lodged a police report over accusations linking her to a human trafficking syndicate in Myanmar.

Denying her involvement in such activities, Mashitah said the information of the alleged involvement came from tabloid media in Indonesia.

"I have made a police report and given my statement in Bukit Aman on the outrageous allegations made by the Malaysian International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) linking me to the activities as reported by Harian Metro yesterday.

"I deny any involvement in those activities. I will not hesitate to take any legal action on those who try to associate me with this falsehood to damage my reputation," she wrote on Facebook today.

Yesterday, the MHO filed a report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, asking them to investigate the alleged involvement of a politician and their spouse in connection with a human trafficking syndicate in Myanmar.

Its secretary-general, Datuk Hishamuddin Hashim said the syndicate's modus operandi involved deceiving victims online by offering attractive job opportunities before forcing them to work as online gambling scammers.

He claimed that the female politician in question was a former member of Parliament, while her husband was a retired civil servant.
