Malaysia has its own security priorities, says home minister

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia cannot adopt the same priorities as other countries when addressing security threats and public order, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

This, he said, was because different nations, including Malaysia, faced varying criminal challenges and prioritised their responses accordingly.

"For the United States, their priorities are terrorism and financial terrorism, for China, it is financial scams, for the Middle Eastern countries, it is terrorism and financial terrorism and for Singapore, it is scams and cybercrimes, drug trafficking and terrorism.

"In Malaysia, our security concerns are illegal immigration, drug smuggling, drug addiction and substance abuse, illegal fishing and the encroachment of foreign fishermen into our waters.

"The Eastern Sabah region has its own security concerns," he said at the closing of the 2024 Internal Security Conference.

"As such, we hope that the input from this conference will provide the ministry with the information needed to develop effective government policies."

In a press conference later, Saifuddin said integrity and corruption remained the priorities for the government although they were not a primary focus of the conference.

He said issues related to integrity were discussed at the conference, which was attended by 800 people from various backgrounds and branches of national security.
