Anwar saddened by Raja Petra's passing

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed sadness at the passing of blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, who died last night.

The Manchester-based blogger, commonly known as RPK, was a strong supporter of the Anwar-led Reformasi movement in its early days.

"My deepest condolences to the family. I am saddened," Anwar said, adding that he would pray for Raja Petra's soul and for his family to be granted strength during this difficult time.

Earlier, it was reported that Raja Petra, 74, had died in the United Kingdom due to an infection.

A well-known figure in the Malaysian blogging scene, Raja Petra had been living in self-exile in the UK since 2010.

He reportedly fled to avoid arrest under the colonial-era Internal Security Act, a law under which he was previously detained in 2001 and 2008.

A member of the Selangor royal family, Raja Petra was known for his writings and commentaries on Malaysian politics.
