Zahid: Use blockchain to boost transparency, reduce fraud in halal certification

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for the adoption of cutting-edge technology, such as blockchain, to improve transparency and reduce fraud in the halal certification process.

"By adopting this technology, Malaysia can strengthen its halal processes, reduce trade barriers, and align with global standards," he said at the Global Halal Summit (GHAS) 2024 and Halal Malaysia Golden Jubilee Celebration grand dinner last night.

He said Malaysia is committed to remain a global leader in the halal industry, reflecting on 50 years of Malaysia's pioneering role in the halal sector.

"Tonight, we celebrate a major milestone - 50 years of Malaysia's pioneering journey in the halal industry."

He said regulatory framework for the halal industry must be enhanced, with streamlining certification processes and bolstering industry growth to ensure rigorous oversights being priorities always.

Zahid outlined plans to further enhance Malaysia's halal parks.

"Malaysia is home to 14 strategically located halal parks," he said, explaining that these hubs serve as production and innovation centres for both multinational corporations and local SMEs.

"Our dedicated Task Force is actively working to enhance these halal parks, transforming them into epicentres of production and innovation."

He emphasised that investing in the training of a new generation of halal certification professionals is essential.

"With increasing global demand, expanding the pool of qualified experts is crucial to upholding the highest standards of authenticity and integrity."

This was on the heels of the cabinet's decision that halal certification will continue to be on a voluntary basis in Malaysia.

The Global Halal Summit (GHAS) 2024 and Halal Malaysia Golden Jubilee Celebration is being held from today since yesterday. It is themed "Propelling Communities Towards Halal Excellence."
