Student drowns at Wong Ruan waterfall

SARIKEI: A study trip by four students of Sarikei High School here ended in tragedy when one of them drowned at Wong Ruan waterfall in Ulu Sarikei today.

Sarikei Fire and Rescue Department identified the deceased as teenager Alex Lau Hui Ping whose body was retrieved from the bottom of the waterfall.

He was confirmed dead by medical personnel from the Health Ministry.

Sarikei Bomba operation commander Mijan Pamin said based on an initial information, the four students had gone to the areas to conduct a study.

"After conducting the study, one of them then jumped into the river to take a bath, and he failed to resurface," he said.

He added another student then reported the matter to the residents of the nearby longhouse to seek their assistance.

Mijan said upon receiving a call at about 11.30am, Lubok Lemba station rushed 12 men to the scene.

He said the body was retrieved from the bottom of the three-metre deep waterfall at about 12.03pm.

The deceased's body was handed over to police who later brought it to the Sarikei hospital for further action.
