TAWAU: The maritime community in Sabah has been urged to prioritise safety and remain vigilant due to the looming threat of unpredictable weather.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) issued the reminder following an alert issued by the Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).
According to METMalaysia, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds are expected to hit Sabah starting Sept 24, affecting areas including its west coast.
Tawau MMEA Captain Shahrizan Raman said the inclement weather was expected to last until early November.
He said there would be potential danger to small boats, passenger operators and local fisheries, urging heightened precautions to avoid accidents at sea.
He said the public could report emergencies to the Tawau Maritime Operations Centre by calling 089-750116 or the 999 emergency line, both available around the clock.
