Army confirms fatal shooting of soldier in Sarawak training operation

KUALA LUMPUR: A police report has been lodged on the death of a soldier who was fatally shot during a training exercise in a forested area in Sarawak earlier today.

The army, in a statement today, also confirmed that the 28-year-old victim is from the 9th Brigade in Sibu was undergoing a training exercise at a forested area in Song within the Kapit division.

"A report on the incident has been lodged and the police are conducting an investigation.

 "Please allow the investigation to run its course and respect the family's and relatives' grief over the tragedy," the statement said.   

Earlier today, it was reported that a soldier undergoing training in a forested area in Song, within the Kapit Division, was fatally shot, allegedly by a poacher.

 

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata confirmed that the victim was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Kapit Hospital at 7.43am.

The victim was believed to have been participating in the "Eksesais Pasak Bumi Siri 2/2024" training exercise when the incident occurred.

He sustained injuries to his waist and left thigh from gunshots, which occurred at about 2.45am.   

Meanwhile, the army added that funeral arrangements will be made once the post-mortem is complete.   

"The next of kin in Sarikei, Sarawak, have been informed, and the burial location will be announced later."
