SESB to install 94MW gas power plant in Kimanis

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) has been granted approval to install a gas power plant to enhance generation capacity reserves in the Sabah Grid.

SESB recently received a Letter of Notification (LoN) from the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) for the supply and installation of a gas turbine generator with a capacity of 94 Megawatts (MW).

The project is set to commence this month and is expected to be operational by June next year.

SESB chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said this gas-based power plant project is one of the short-term initiatives outlined in the Generation Development Plan approved by the Sabah Energy Council.

The plant will be located in Kimanis and connected to the Sabah Grid system through an injection point at the Langsat Main Intake Substation in Kimanis.

"The need for this fast track project is critical to ensure sufficient generation capacity and maintain the stability of the Sabah Grid," he said in a statement yesterday (Sept 24).
