KUANTAN: The National Museum Department is ready to assist the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) in building a sports museum to honour athletes and preserve memorabilia related to the field.
National Museum Department director-general Datuk Kamarul Baharin A. Kasim said the department was always open to provide suggestions and assistance towards helping make the sports museum a reality.
"The sports museum was initially a suggestion by the KBS and we are only assisting by providing advice. We are unsure about the progress.
"We are always open to provide advice and the necessary support," he told reporters after accompanying National unity ministry secretary-general, Datuk Seri Hasnol Zam Zam Ahmad to open the Semarak@Muzium Sungai Lembing programme here today.
When asked if there had been any discussions between the National Museum Department and KBS, Kamarul Baharin replied that to date there have been no discussions held.
The sports museum was proposed by Khairy Jamaluddin, who served as Youth and Sports Minister previously, several years ago to display Malaysian sports history and showcase the success of national athletes.
Khairy was reported saying the museum complex should not be a place to only remember history but serve as an inspiration for Malaysians to achieve more success in sports and exhibit medals, sports equipment and apparel worn by former national athletes during their heydays.
