UMPSA pro-chancellor: Research should be measured by impact, not just numbers and awards

KUANTAN: Research conducted at universities should not be evaluated solely based on the number of publications or recognitions but by its ability to contribute meaningfully to policy development, industry innovation and the well-being of society.

Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) Pro-Chancellor Tan Sri Abi Musa Asa'ari Mohamed Nor said: "For researchers, each new discovery serves as a stepping stone to inspire and dream towards greater discoveries.

"I call upon all researchers to continue exploring innovative solutions based on solid data, accurate analysis, and a scientific approach with integrity," he said in his speech during UMPSA's Cendekia Bitara Award at a hotel here today.

He further emphasised that researchers must focus on good governance which plays a vital role in research management, innovation and commercialisation.

"We do not only want research products and commercialisation with quality but product management and researchers with integrity so that UMPSA will serve as a centre of reference, earning respect both locally and abroad," he said.

Abi Musa Asa'ari also praised UMPSA over their achievements after 19 researchers were listed as the top two per cent of scientists worldwide by Stanford University. Ten were listed in the Career-Long Achievement category while 18 were recognised Single Year Achievements.

Meanwhile, UMPSA vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Ts Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin, in his speech, described the university's achievement in the field of research and innovation throughout last year ensures UMPSA is on the right path to gain success and improve its role in producing outstanding researchers.

"UMPSA's participation in research competitions serves as an encouragement for researchers to highlight their innovations and explore opportunities for potential products to be developed into commercial (products) or solutions for the industry.

"Until last year, 39 UMPSA research products were successfully commercialised, generating RM7.4 million in gross sales.

"UMPSA researchers are actively involved in consultation by contributing their expertise, professional services, skills and knowledge, supported by the university's facilities and scientific equipment."

On the Cendekia Bitara Award which recognises UMPSA academicians who have excelled in research, innovation, commercialisation and publication fields, Yuserrie said it involved 81 University e-Learning Awards (APU) and seven University Academic Award (AAU) recipients.
