Malaysia to study South Korea's 5G strategy for better indoor coverage [WATCH]

SEOUL: Malaysia will study South Korea's use of different spectrums and frequencies to address in-building internet coverage issues, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the method proved effective in South Korea, which faced similar issues before.

"They (LG U+) informed me of a solution that involves one frequency, one spectrum, so I've ask MCMC to look into the findings and views from LG U+ if it is suitable and can be used in Malaysia, we will work on a proof-of-concept," he told Bernama.

Earlier, Fahmi held a meeting with LG U+ executive vice president Johan Sue-hyun Chung and senior officials of the telecommunications company and attended a briefing on the status of 5G network coverage in South Korea.

Also present was Maxis chief executive officer Goh Seow Eng.

Fahmi was also briefed on an artificial intelligence (AI) application developed by LG U+ to help users answer phone calls as well as detect elements of fraud.

He also visited the LG Science Park, South Korea's largest research complex, which showcases the company's automotive and logistics products using AI technology.

Fahmi said he has asked Telekom Malaysia (TM) and LG U+ to explore potential 5G collaboration, focusing on local companies in the industrial and enterprise sectors.

Founded in 1996, LG U+ is a leading South Korean telecom firm known for its 5G, broadband, and IoT services.

Fahmi, currently on a three-day visit to South Korea, will deliver a keynote at the GSMA Mobile 360 APAC conference, explore film industry collaborations, and meet telecom representatives to discuss connectivity insights. — BERNAMA
