Factory worker pleads guilty to possessing IS-linked materials

KUALA LUMPUR: A factory worker today pleaded guilty at the High Court here to three charges of supporting and possessing materials linked to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.

Suhaini Sarwan,46, made her plea after the charges were read again to her separately before judge Datuk Noorin Badaruddin.

She was initially charged at the Johor Baru Sessions Court but no plea were recorded and the cases were transferred to the High Court here.

On the first count, she was accused of possessing IS-linked items and terrorist acts on two handphones at 1.15pm at a premises in the Kempas Industrial Area on May 30.

The offence under Paragraph 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code punishable under Section 130JB(1) carries a jail term not more than seven years or with a fine and the items used or intended to be used to commit the offence must be seized.

On the second and third counts, she was accused of knowingly giving support to IS through Facebook accounts under the names Suhaini Sarwan and Enma Kenma.

She committed the offences at about 5.50pm at the Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (E8), Menara 2 in Bukit Aman on May 27.

The offences under Paragraph 130J(1)(a) of the same code carry a maximum 40 years jail term or with a fine and the items used or intended to be used to commit the offence must be seized.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohammad Fakhrurrazi Ahmad Salim said a lawyer from the Legal Aid Department, who previously stood for Suhaini in Johor Bahru and will mitigate for her, could not be present at the court today.

He said Suhaini's two other cases at the Kota Tinggi Sessions Court will be transferred here as well.

The court set Oct 16 for mitigation and sentencing.

In June, she claimed trial for two charges related to possession of materials linked to the IS.

Suhaini was also jointly charged with her husband, Muhammad Feesol Haron, 35, and Mohd Firdaus Kamal Intdzam, 37, on five counts of the same offences.

No plea was recorded as the cases are under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
