New NS Training to include modules on parliamentary democracy, monarchy

KUANTAN: Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers will be exposed to modules on parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy in the revamped National Service Training Programme 3.0 scheduled to begin in 2026.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said modules on the country's parliamentary system will also be part of the 30 per cent basic modules of nationhood which will be taught during the 45-day programme.

"Upon completing their SPM, students will be sent to participate in basic NS Training where they will be taught to develop their leadership skills not only to venture into politics but become leaders in various other fields.

"They will be instilled with confidence to speak the facts and face the public.

"The nationhood modules cover a wide range of topics including the country's democratic system, constitutional monarchy, Dewan Negara, Dewan Rakyat and state assembly sittings.

"Students will learn about the law making process and how the government operates, which will raise awareness on their responsibilities to vote.

"All these modules will certainly provide students with a better understanding because they do not have the opportunity to learn these modules in school. Instead of blaming others (for not teaching these in schools), we have created a system to educate the youths," he told reporters after opening the Akademi Menara Gading 2.0 at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) here today.

Akademi Menara Gading 2.0, the brainchild of the Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who is also the UMPSA Chancellor, and the Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, is aimed at providing proper and quality education to low income families.

Johari earlier witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UMPSA and Yayasan Al-Sultan Abdullah (YASA).

Meanwhile, Johari described the nationhood modules as part of the preparations to help youths to become leaders to take charge of the country in the future.

"We want to get the young generation ready and not rely on 'trial and error'. We are planning for their future through proper management and monitoring," he said.

On July 10, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the revamped NS Training programme for participants aged 17 and above is expected to commence in April 2026.

Thirty per cent of the programme will deal with nationhood while the remainder will be military-style training.
