Slight increase in Kedah, Perlis flood victims

KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation affecting several states has shown no significant changes as of 8pm tonight, with Kedah and Perlis seeing a slight increase in the number of victims, while Selangor, Perak, and Johor recorded a slight drop. Melaka's numbers remained unchanged.

In Kedah, the number of victims increased to 1,419 from 447 families, compared to 1,157 from 347 families earlier this evening, with Pokok Sena among the latest districts hit by the disaster.

Kedah Civil Defence Force Deputy Director Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said 597 victims are currently taking shelter in five temporary relocation centers (PPS) in Kota Setar: SMK Alor Merah, SMK Kepala Batas, SK Taman Aman, SK Titi Gajah, and SK Haji Idris.

In the Kubang Pasu district, 559 victims are housed in six PPS: SMK Changlun, Dewan PPK Lubuk Batu, SK Malau, SMK Indera Putra, SMK Mahawangsa, and SK Ahmad Tajuddin. In Pendang, 240 individuals are sheltered at the PPS Dewan Rakan Sukan Complex Tanah Merah.

"In Baling, 23 victims are in four PPS: SMK Parit Panjang, SK Siong, Kampung Haji Abas Community Hall, and Maktab Mahmud School. In Pokok Sena, two PPS have been opened: SK Tualang and Pokok Multipurpose Hall. The number of victims in Pokok Sena is still being counted," he said in a statement.

In Perlis, the State Social Welfare Department's (JKM) Disaster Info data showed an increase in flood victims to 195 from 62 families, compared to 119 from 38 families earlier this evening. They are sheltered in three PPS: SK Sena, Kangar (89 victims); SK Kubang Gajah, Arau (52 victims); and SK Guar Nangka, Padang Besar (54 victims).

In Perak, the State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat reported that 163 people from 49 families are still sheltering in three PPS, down from 215 people from 60 families earlier. They are housed in PPS SK Changkat Lobak and SK Parit Haji Aman Bagan Serai in the Kerian district, and the Multi-Purpose Shooting Range Hall in Hilir Perak.

In Johor, the number of flood victims dropped to 495 from 133 families, compared to 502 victims from 134 families earlier this afternoon. The PPS involved are Dewan Kampung Kolam Air and SK Sungai Linau in Kluang; SK Seri Anom, SK Parit Markom, and Kompleks Muafakat Kampung Sungai Pinggan in Pontian; and SK Seri Bunut in Batu Pahat.

In Melaka, the number of flood victims remains at 22 people from six families, who are housed at PPS SK Tehel, Jasin.– BERNAMA
