MetMalaysia enhances forecasting: New system extends predictions to 14 days

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) is currently upgrading its High-Performance Computing (HPC) system to enhance weather forecasting capabilities across the country.

MetMalaysia's deputy director-general (Strategic) Ambun Dindang said that the upgrade would extend forecasting capabilities from the current seven-day outlook to 14 days.

He said that the upgraded HPC system was expected to be operational by 2026.

"Over the past decade, we have seen improvements in accuracy, although it's not yet 100 per cent accurate," he said.

"At the very least, we can now predict the arrival of the monsoon and rainfall surges, allowing us to inform the public and disaster management agencies to help everyone prepare in advance," he told Astro Awani.

In preparation for the upcoming northeast monsoon, MetMalaysia has already gathered data and forecasts regarding the states likely to face flood disasters.

Ambun said that flooding on the east coast typically occurred between November and December, while southern states usually experienced it from December to January.

In Sabah and Sarawak, floods are expected between January and February.

Additionally, he said that 24-hour weather monitoring would be conducted, with the operations room remaining open at all times.

"Daily weather briefings will also be held throughout the monsoon season with state offices to explain our forecasts, particularly for the next seven days," he added.
