Iconic Penang ferry tilts while being towed to new location

GEORGE TOWN: The iconic Penang ferry, which is supposed to be transformed into the Penang Ferry Museum, has partly tilted.

The ferry was towed from the Bagan Dalam Slipway to the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) last Thursday.

Many Penangites took the opportunity to witness the historic moment as it marked the last ferry to cross the KTMB Swing Bridge following the closure of the Bagan Dalam Slipway.

Photos of the tilting ferry have since gone viral on social media.

Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin told the New Straits Times that he had been informed of the matter and that necessary mitigating measures are being carried out.

"I was told that the company undertaking the project, Printhero Merchandise (M) Sdn Bhd, is taking the necessary mitigating measures.

"We have asked them for a full report on the incident," he said.

The Penang Ferry Museum is touted to be the first floating ferry museum in Asia.

It was reported that after nearly a century of service, the iconic Penang car-carrying ferries ceased operations on Dec 31, 2020. As of Jan 1, 2021, Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), which took over the ferry service from Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, began operating fast passenger boats between the mainland and the island.
