Home Ministry introduces SOP to guide citizenship applicants on status

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry has introduced a standard operating procedure (SOP) to keep citizenship applicants informed about their application status.

Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the SOP has been approved by the Cabinet.

"Before they submit their application, they must comply with several prerequisites. If they adhere (to the SOP),, there will be no issues in terms of the process.

"We will only need to verify the validity of the documents," he said during his closing speech in the debate on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024 concerning citizenship in Parliament today.

He added that informing applicants of the requirements beforehand will help reduce cases where applicants don't know why they're rejected.

"As soon as they submit, officers will brief if any document is incomplete. But if they want to proceed, there's a risk of rejection."

Earlier, the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024 on citizenship passed with a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, as announced by Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

The vote tally: 206 agreed, one disagreed, one was suspended from voting, and 14 were absent.
