Boy, 7, dies after motorcycle ridden by 10-year-old brother collides with van

BALING: A seven-year-old pupil was killed when a motorcycle ridden by his 10-year-old brother collided with a van on Jalan Baling-Tanjung Pari, near Kampung Charok Putih, here today.

Baling police chief Superintendent Azmi Mokhtar said the victim, Muhammad Darimi Mohd Naim, from Kampung Surau here, was killed on the spot after being pinned under the van in the 3.30pm incident.

Azmi said the victim's brother, Muhammad Daniyal, and the latter's 10-year-old schoolmate, Muhamad Adam Daniel Mohd Azam, who was also riding pillion on the motorcycle, were rushed to Baling Hospital.

All three boys, pupils of SK Seri Bayu here, were not wearing helmets at the time of the incident.

"The crash occurred when a 26-year-old van driver, a trader from Kampung Landai in Sik district, was travelling to a night market in Kampung Bandar with three friends.

"Upon reaching the location, suddenly the Modenas Kriss motorcycle emerged from a junction in Kampung Charok Putih and made a right turn towards Kampung Surau.

"The van driver failed to avoid the motorcycle and collided with the right side of the vehicle, sending the rider into a ditch.

"The two boys who were riding pillion were pinned under the front and rear wheels of the Nissan van respectively," he said in a statement today.

Azmi said Darimi died on the spot from severe injuries, while his brother and the other pillion rider, who broke his right leg, were rushed to Baling Hospital.

He added that the van driver suffered cuts to his arm and leg, while his three passengers escaped unhurt.

"The victim's body was sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for a post-mortem tomorrow morning, while the other two boys are receiving treatment at Baling Hospital," he said.
