Anwar to attend inauguration ceremony of Indonesia's new leadership

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake a working visit to Indonesia from Oct 19 to 20, at the invitation of the Indonesian government, to attend the inauguration ceremony of Prabowo Subianto as the eighth President of Indonesia and Gibran Rakabuming Raka as Vice-President.

In a statement, Foreign Ministry said Anwar is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the new President.

Anwar will be accompanied by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as well as senior officials from the Prime Minister's Office and Foreign Ministry, the statement read.

President-elect Prabowo succeeds Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, who served as the seventh President of Indonesia for two terms (2014-2019 and 2019-2024).

Gibran is the eldest son of outgoing President Jokowi.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry said the Malaysian government greatly appreciates the immense contributions and pivotal role played by Jokowi, which have further solidified bilateral relations between Malaysia and Indonesia.

"The Government of Malaysia is also committed to continuing the close ties between the two countries under the new administration of President Prabowo Subianto.

"The visit signifies the special bilateral ties between Malaysia and Indonesia, rooted on close cooperation in a myriad of mutually-beneficial areas," the statement read.

In 2023, Indonesia ranked as Malaysia's seventh-largest trading partner worldwide and third-largest within ASEAN, with total trade reaching US$24.39 billion (RM111.21 billion).

It was reported that the inauguration of President-elect Prabowo and Vice-President-elect Gibran will take place at the People's Consultative Assembly Hall in the Parliament Complex at 10 am local time on Sunday (Oct 20).

The ceremony will commence with remarks from the People's Consultative Assembly head Ahmad Muzani, followed by the reading of the General Elections Commission (KPU)'s decision on the 2024 Presidential Election results, after which Prabowo and Gibran will take their oaths of office.
