Why make announcement on T15 before defining group, asks MP

KUALA LUMPUR: A member of Parliament has questioned the government for announcing measures related to the T15 category before defining the group.

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said this could lead to a lack of clarity over the T15 who were supposedly using up to RM8 billion in fuel subsidies.

Yesterday, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said the definition of the T15 income category, which will be excluded from several government subsidies next year, was still being refined.

Rafizi however confirmed that the T15 would not be solely defined by gross household income but also by locality, and basic household spending among others.

In a post on X, Syed Saddiq questioned how the government determined that the T15 were using up to RM8 billion in fuel subsidies when the group's definition was being refined.

"Which T15 is using this RM8 billion?," he said.

During the 2025 Budget tabling on Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said subsidies would be gradually reduced for the T15, with the savings used to improve infrastructure for boarding schools and public universities.

He also announced that a targeted subsidy plan for RON95 fuel will be introduced in the middle of next year.

He said the savings generated by the government would be reinvested for the benefit of the public.
