KUALA LUMPUR: In light of the alarming increase in serious accidents involving heavy vehicles such as lorries and buses, advocates are urging the government to launch a comprehensive road safety campaign.
Malaysian Wheelchair Users Association president Zamri Mansor expressed his concerns following a recent crash on the Elite Highway near the Bangi and Nilai junctions, where a trailer lost control and veered into oncoming traffic.
"Many similar incidents have occurred, resulting in numerous casualties among innocent road users. These accidents are often due to reckless driving and blatant disregard for speed limits," he said.
To address this issue, he proposed a campaign encouraging the public to honk at heavy vehicles that violate traffic regulations, especially those exceeding speed limits.
"We need widespread awareness through mass media to ensure all road users are informed," he said.
Zamri also suggested placing warnings on the sides and rear of heavy vehicles stating, "Please honk if I am driving over the speed limit or dangerously."
He also called for amendments to the Road Transport Act to protect individuals who report dangerous driving, stressing the need to safeguard them from harassment by irresponsible drivers.
"Stricter penalties for offenders are essential to reinforce road safety," he said.
As accidents continue to pose a threat to public safety, the proposed campaign aims to cultivate a culture of accountability and vigilance among all road users in Malaysia.
