KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for nine states and two federal territories this evening.
In a post on its official Facebook page at 4pm, it forecasted lightning and strong winds accompanied by heavy rain in Perlis, Kedah (including Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Sik, Baling, Kulim, and Bandar Baharu), as well as Penang.
Similar weather conditions are expected in Perak, affecting areas such as Kerian, Larut, Matang, Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Perak Tengah, Kampar, and Muallim.
Parts of Terengganu — including Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun, and Kemaman — will also experience these conditions.
In Pahang, the affected areas include Raub, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan, and Rompin.
Selangor is also on alert, with warnings for Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling, Hulu Langat, and Sepang, as well as for Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
Additionally, Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Jempol, and Tampin in Negeri Sembilan, as well as parts of Johor, are included in the warning.
The storm is expected to last until 7pm.
MetMalaysia said that storm warnings were issued when signs of thunderstorms indicate rain intensity exceeding 20 mm per hour, which is expected to last for more than an hour.
These warnings are short-term and valid for a maximum of six hours.
