KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has asked Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and his top officers to conduct a feasibility study on generating power from the ocean.
He said the ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) process could be another source of green energy for Sarawak.
"Apart from gas, hydro and solar, there is another source, but I want the State Secretary and his officers to research the ocean thermal energy conversion or OTEC that produces energy from temperature differences in ocean waters," he said at the 85th-anniversary dinner of the Sarawak Malay National Association here last night.
"This is a new source, and if the research is successful, then Sarawak may have a new source of green energy," he said.
Abang Johari expressed his hope that the research will be successful so that Sarawak can tap into a new source of green energy.
The premier said other countries are looking at Sarawak as a role model in the green energy transition due to the use of new technology.
"Last week, I was invited by the Singapore government to give a keynote address on green energy transition.
"They look at Sarawak at the forefront, as very advanced in green energy," the premier said.
Among those present at the anniversary dinner were Sarawak Governor Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar; his wife Puan Sri Fauziah Mohd Sanusi; Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
