PENAMPANG: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili has contributed significantly to Sabah and Sarawak, said PBS acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.
Dr Joachim said Ongkili's achievements could not be overlooked.
He said the progress in the relationship between the Sabah government and the federal government was a testament to the groundwork laid by past leaders, including the then Sabah and Sarawak affairs minister.
"During his tenure as minister for Sabah and Sarawak affairs in the Prime Minister's Department, many initiatives were implemented, including the formation of a special committee to look into Sabah's and Sarawak's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
"Chaired by the prime minister, the committee serves as an excellent platform for leaders from Sabah and Sarawak to express their aspirations.
"During his service, the president accelerated the implementation of development projects, introduced legislation beneficial to the people of East Malaysia and initiated many crucial efforts, from rural development programmes to improving educational and economic infrastructure.
"These are among the president's contributions, showcasing his credibility as a leader."
He said this in his policy speech at PBS' 39th annual delegates' conference at the Hongkod Koisaan Hall here.
Ongkili, who is former Kota Marudu member of parliament, announced a break from politics from June 1 due to health reasons.
Dr Joachim was appointed PBS acting president with the support of senior party leaders and the supreme council.
"This struggle should not end here. Even though the president has chosen to rest, we hope he will still play a key role in PBS," Dr Joachim said.
"Your success reflects greatly on PBS. We, alongside Sabahans, are immensely grateful to you.
"We must continue to demand our unmet rights, including the restoration of Sabah's rights under MA63 and increased state autonomy.
"This is PBS' promise. We will ensure that every effort continues until these goals are achieved."
