BUKIT MERTAJAM: The government will introduce stricter laws to tackle the growing issue of cyberbullying, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He said the bill would be presented in the upcoming parliamentary session.
"We will introduce stricter cyberbullying laws. We will present it in the next parliamentary session.
"I have also asked relevant authorities, such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and police, to take strong action where possible, without compromise," he said at an engagement session at the Generasi Ada Idea (Gen-AI) Carnival here today.
Present were Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din.
Anwar said while the country valued freedom, this did not permit individuals to commit crimes, especially bullying.
He said bullying should not be taken lightly, as it could have psychological effects and threaten a person's safety and life.
"Freedom is not an excuse to abuse others. It is not for insulting or humiliating others.
"This country must be different. This country talks about freedom and justice, but will never condone any form of oppression, insult or abuse."
