SEMPORNA: The Semporna District Council (MDS) has launched an operation to capture stray dogs following the tragic death of a two-year-old boy, who was believed to have been attacked by the animals in Kampung Sungai Tohok recently.
District Officer Alexander Liew confirmed that the operation, supported by the Department of Veterinary Services (JPV), aimed at addressing the growing issue of stray dogs in several identified areas around the district and to prevent further threats to public safety.
"We are deeply saddened by this incident, especially since it occurred in a village area. Efforts are being made to address and eliminate stray animals, particularly dogs.
"Although there are operational constraints, we will carry out these efforts comprehensively, with periodic actions over time, including in rural areas," he said.
Local resident Adi, 42, said that fatal dog attacks were not a new issue in the district.
He pointed to a similar incident in September 2022, where a 29-year-old local woman was found with severe bite marks and injuries after being attacked by stray dogs.
"MDS, as the local authority, has the responsibility and power to conduct operations to address issues related to abandoned animals. This is necessary to protect public safety and prevent the spread of diseases such as rabies," he added.
Yesterday, the media reported that a two-year-old boy died after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs near his home.
In the 8.41am incident, the victim, Nazrin Sah Nasir, was reportedly heading to a shop with his cousin while his father was having breakfast, unaware of the tragic situation unfolding.
The child was found by villagers, unclothed and covered in blood, believed to have been attacked by a pack of stray dogs near a hall close to his home at 9am.
