KUALA LUMPUR: The government has assured that Malaysia's foreign policy will remain unchanged following its participation in BRICS and that it will open up more new opportunities for the country.
Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin said that as a sovereign nation, Malaysia is free to choose any organisation it wishes to join, but these decisions are made with careful consideration to ensure they benefit the nation.
He emphasised that Malaysia has always played an active role in organisations it has been part of, including the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement.
"Our involvement in any organisation will be active and impactful for the country. Furthermore, as Malaysia will chair Asean next year, we will play a significant role on the international stage," he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to an additional question from V, Ganabatirau (PH-Klang) regarding whether Malaysia's foreign policy would change after joining BRICS and the assurance that other member states would not interfere in Malaysia's domestic affairs, such as its politics, economy, and sovereignty.
