KUALA LUMPUR: A DAP member of Parliament has offered to help a whistleblower expose several assemblymen who allegedly discussed bribes for project licences.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng urged the whistleblower to reach out to him before the end of the current Parliament sitting in December.
"The whistleblower, who holds critical information, wants full protection before filing a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)," he said in a statement.
"However, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki insists that the whistleblower must first submit a report to qualify for protection under the Whistleblower Protection Act.
"I am prepared to present the evidence and disclose the names of those involved in parliament, pressing for the authorities to take swift and decisive action," he said.
Previously, Malaysiakini reported that several assemblymen have been caught on tape discussing bribes in exchange for obtaining project licences in a state.
Yesterday, Azam said the graft busters have yet to receive a report on the matter, though the whistleblower's lawyer has met with MACC officers.
He had said the whistleblower's lawyer played a 17-second audio recording in which several individuals were heard discussing money but did not disclose the identity of those involved.
The lawyer, he added, said the whistleblower would only be willing to provide further evidence if the MACC signed an agreement assuring his client would not be placed under investigation.
Azam said the MACC officials, however, refused to sign such an agreement as it did not comply with the commission's procedures.
