Malaysia pledges unwavering support for Lebanon as Israel intensifies attacks

RIYADH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has pledged Malaysia's unwavering support for Lebanon as it faces intensified attacks from the Israeli government.

Anwar conveyed this during a courtesy call on his Lebanese counterpart, Najib Mikati, ahead of the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit.

"Malaysia stands in solidarity with Lebanon, which is currently facing the madness of the Zionist Israeli regime," he said on Facebook.

Anwar also expressed concern over the direct impact of the conflict on Malaysia.

"Malaysia is also directly affected by the tensions in Lebanon following the Israeli attacks," he said, referring to the recent injuries sustained by six Malaysian Battalion (Malbatt) members serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.

"Malaysia is prepared to extend financial aid to Lebanon to support victims impacted by the Israeli aggression," he added.

On Friday, the Defence Ministry said six of its peacekeepers serving under the United Nations were injured in a midnight explosion on Thursday near Saida Stadium in southern Lebanon.

The injuries were confirmed by the United Nations, which stated that the peacekeepers were caught in an Israeli airstrike that also killed three civilians.

The Malbatt team, comprising 220 officers and members of other ranks, had recently arrived in Lebanon to continue their peacekeeping mission under the UN when the attack occurred.
