PETALING JAYA: The Selangor Road Transport Department has taken action against 1,575 errant motorcyclists in the first 12 days since it launched its Op Khas Motosikal on Nov 1.
State RTD director Azrin Borhan said 325 enforcement personnel have been deployed to conduct these operations at various accident hotspots statewide.
"The operation which will continue until Dec 31 is being carried out to reduce accidents involving motorcyclists while also taking action against errant riders.
"We have checked 19,362 motorcyclists so far and taken action against 1,575 of them.
"In total, we issued 3,855 summons notices to these errant motorcyclists with the highest offence detected being technical offences," he told reporters when met at the Petaling Jaya Selatan Toll Plaza along the LDP on Tuesday night.
He explained that 1,644 summons notices were issued for technical offences involving motorcyclists which included illegal modifications, not having side mirrors and defective lights.
"We also issued 983 summons notices for not having valid road tax and 737 summons notices for not having a valid license.
"302 summons notices were also issued for license plate offences while 34 summons notices were issued for the seven main traffic offences," he said.
The seven offences are queue cutting, overtaking on a double line, running the red light at the traffic light, going over the speed limit, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt or helmet, and abusing the emergency lane.
Azrin said checks revealed that many motorcyclists illegally modified their machines due to peer pressure.
"Some of them were also keen to make their motorcyclists faster because of their interest in racing.
"We urge motorcyclists to follow the traffic laws and to respect other road users," he said.
Azrin said the department would set up at least seven to eight roadblocks daily in all districts within the state.
The operation on Tuesday night saw 631 motorcyclists checked with 259 summons notices issued.
Nineteen motorcycles were ordered to go for further inspections while five bikes were also seized.
The National Anti-Drug Agency also checked 19 individuals and detained five of them for testing positive for methamphetamines.
