Bad weather puts damper on Kuah ferry passenger traffic

LANGKAWI: The number of people who took ferries to the terminal at Kuah here from January to September fell by 9,101 compared with the same period last year.

The island's assistant district officer, Zulkifli Abdullah, said there were 883,595 inbound passengers this year.

He said, however, the terminal continues to play a big role in driving tourism on the island.

"From January to September, there were 863,078 domestic passengers and 20,517 international passengers," he said after officiating at the 'Gotong-Royong Silaturrahim' programme at the terminal today.

Among the reasons for the decline in passenger traffic were disruptions to ferry schedules caused by unpredictable weather and shallow routes, he said.

The Kuah ferry terminal is one of three main entry points to the island. The others are Langkawi International Airport in Padang Matsirat and Tanjung Lembung Dockyard in Bukit Malut.
