Family fun fuses with eco-art at ScrapScapes

KUALA LUMPUR: Galeri Prima, together with Sime Darby Property and KL East Mall, has launched ScrapScapes, an art initiative that fuses environmental awareness with creative expression.

Supported by Universiti Teknologi MARA's (UiTM) College of Creative Art and the Malaysian Institute of Art, the project is themed "Regain the Past, Restore the Present, Reinvent the Future".

Galeri Prima general manager Eileen Lim said ScrapScapes was a family-oriented event aimed at raising awareness through the fun of doing art.

"Galeri Prima, together with Sime Darby Property and KL East Mall, have introduced ScrapScapes as an activity to raise awareness about sustainability and the environment.

"This is a competition for families, starting from as young as five years old, to create art using recycled items," Lim said.

The programme features public art contests, such as Whimsical Line (doodle art), Art on Box, and Assemblage Art.

ScrapScapes is part of the Sustainable & Environmental Arts Assemble (SEAA), a Galeri Prima initiative that promotes sustainability through art.

The contests attracted around 60 participants aged 5 and above, who transformed waste into thought-provoking artworks.

Lim emphasised the key message for children: "Children need to know that we need to reduce the amount of waste. They also need to know that trash is not just trash — it can be made into beautiful art."

The winning pieces are on display at KL East Mall.

The exhibition, running from Nov 16 to 24, includes sustainable art workshops that focus on creating art using discarded and eco-friendly materials.

In August, Galeri Prima held a similar activity featuring recycled and reused materials at its booth at the Jom Heboh Carnival at the Terengganu State Sports Complex, Gong Badak.

The activity, named Jom Kreatif Galeri Prima, offers visitors, especially children, the opportunity to engage in artistic activities and express their creativity.
