BANDAR BAHARU: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has issued a stern warning to those spreading lies alleging that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged Israel's existence and its right to defend itself.
Saifuddin said it was baffling that certain quarters were spreading such slander, despite the world being aware of Malaysia's firm stance in the Palestinian cause.
"The Prime Minister's stand is very clear. There is not a shred of doubt. However, some quarters are still going around spreading lies that Anwar Ibrahim supports Israel, acknowledging Israel.
"That's why the PM said there should be a limit to playing politics, especially amongst those from a party that carries an Islamic label. It is very unfortunate.
"Don't go to the extent that you can't make a proper judgement just to score political points by portraying Anwar as equal to Israel in order to rile support from the Malays," he said in a press conference at SK Permatang Pasir here today after jointly launching the national-level School Anti-Drug Campaign 2024, with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
Present were Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman, Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Ruji Ubi and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) director-general Ruslin Jusoh.
Saifuddin urged those who were spreading the slander to stop doing so, or they would have to face the music.
"I believe the majority of people who have been following this issue are wise enough to make a judgement.
"They are simply trying to insult people's wisdom.
"That's why we are telling (those involved) to just stop. However, if they still go overboard, we will act on it," he said.
Yesterday, Anwar, who was attending the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting in Peru, condemned those who accused him of acknowledging Israel's existence and its right to defend itself.
Anwar firmly denied allegations from certain parties that he recognises Israel, calling these accusations slanderous and made under the guise of religion.
The issue arose following Anwar's recent interview with CNN, which went viral after the edited interview clip, now circulating on social media, created a false impression that the government acknowledged Israel's existence and its right to self-defence.
