[UPDATED] Monorail upgrades promise faster, smoother rides

KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Anthony Loke said upgrades to the Monorail service were going well.

He said the Platform Automatic Gates System at the KL Sentral and Tun Sambanthan stations was completed on Nov 15.

He said the systems at the Maharajalela, Hang Tuah, Imbi, and Bukit Bintang stations would be ready by the end of the month.

For the remaining stations, the system would be ready by year end.

"At the beginning of the year, I challenged Prasarana to complete the project within a year.

"The contract was awarded in April.

"It was supposed to take 12 months, but KL Sentral and Tun Sambanthan stations were completed earlier," he said.

"I am very happy. It adds to the comfort of passengers," Loke said after checking upgrades for the Monorail line.

He said maintenance work for escalators and lifts at all monorail stations would be completed by April, with RM16.81 million was allocated for the projects.

He said most of the RM10 million was spent replacing lifts at the stations.

He said Prasarana would receive three new coaches in 2026, reducing Monorail's peak hour waiting time from seven to five minutes.

Currently, it serves an average of 60,000 passengers daily.

"We expect to receive the additional train sets in 24 months, by 2026," he said.
