PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia welcomes the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hizbollah as a measure to prevent further attacks and invasions.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said a peaceful resolution to the conflict was highly welcomed, although Malaysia was still awaiting further details.
"For now, a ceasefire seems to be a positive step, but various parties have raised concerns, and we need to monitor it closely.
"For me, the most important thing is, of course, the ceasefire because at least it can prevent any further attacks or invasions," Anwar said during a Q&A session at the Putrajaya Idea Festival.
Anwar said his concerns are not just limited to the conflict in Lebanon but also in Palestine.
It was reported that a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanese armed group held on Wednesday after they struck a deal brokered by the United States and France.
Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israeli forces can remain in Lebanon for 60 days, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had instructed the military not to allow residents back to villages near the border after four Hizbollah operatives were detained in the area.
The Lebanese army urged returning residents not to approach areas where Israeli forces were present for their own safety.
