KLUANG: A two-lorry collision on the southbound North-South Expressway at Km 53.6 left one of the lorries nearly flattened, but both drivers miraculously survived the ordeal this afternoon.
District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh, said initial investigations indicated that the crash occurred at 2.20 pm when a cargo lorry broke down in the emergency lane.
The rear end of the trailer protruded into the left lane without any warning cones or safety markers.
A heavy-duty prime mover, trailing the cargo lorry, was unable to stop in time and crashed into the rear of the stalled vehicle.
The driver of the cargo lorry, 38-year-old Mohd Izuan Mamat from Segamat, was pinned inside the cabin of his heavily damaged vehicle.
Meanwhile, P. Subramaniam, 46, from Rawang, Selangor, was found beneath the front right wheel of his truck, which had ended up in a roadside drain.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel from Renggam and Kulai were deployed to extricate both victims. Mohd Izuan sustained cuts to his hands and legs, while Subramaniam suffered severe injuries, including fractures to both legs.
Both were transported to Kulai Hospital by ambulance.
The case is investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
The accident caused a significant traffic jam, reducing traffic to a standstill along the affected stretch of highway.
