KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has called on the international community to immediately implement the resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Dec 11, which amongst others called for the immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza.
The Foreign Ministry made the call when it welcomed the adoption of the resolutions passed by the UNGA during the 10th Emergency Special Session in New York.
"Malaysia urges the international community to operationalise these Resolutions in entirety and without delay, and stands firm on her principled position that the Palestinians deserve their own independent and sovereign State, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its," the ministry said in a statement today.
Reuters reported that the UNGA overwhelmingly voted to demand an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the immediate release of all hostages.
The ceasefire demand in the resolution - adopted with 158 votes in favor in the 193-member assembly - was expressed in more urgent language than one urging an immediate humanitarian truce in Gaza that the body "called for" in October 2023 then "demanded" in December 2023.
The world body also threw its support behind the UN Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, adopting a second resolution with 159 votes in favor to deplore a new Israeli law that will ban UNRWA's operations in Israel from late January.
It demanded that Israel respect UNRWA's mandate and "enable its operations to proceed without impediment or restriction."
The United States, Israel and seven other countries voted no, while 11 countries abstained.
"The Resolution entitled "Demand for Ceasefire in Gaza" signifies the international community's unwavering call to end violence, ensure accountability, and achieve lasting peace and stability in
Gaza.
"The Resolution entitled "Support for the Mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)", attests to the international community's unequivocal support for the Agency's indispensable role and mandate, as well as a clear
commitment to countering any attempts to undermine and terminate its operations," the ministry said.
