Nearly 500 enforcement officers charged with corruption since 2020, says Azalina

KUALA LUMPUR: Almost 500 enforcement officers have been charged with corruption from January 2020 to September this year, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

She added that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) received 8,067 reports involving enforcement officers for various offences during the same period.

Of the total reports, Azalina said 4,972 were related to corruption, while the rest were not related to corruption.

"From the corruption-related reports, a total of 1,192 investigation papers were opened, while the remaining 3,780 cases were subjected to other actions, such as intelligence gathering and operational measures.

"During the same period, the MACC initiated 485 charges, leading to 238 convictions," she said in a written parliamentary reply.

Azalina was responding to a question from Nurul Amin Hamid (PN-Padang Terap), who asked the government to disclose the number of corruption-related investigations involving enforcement officers as part of efforts to combat smuggling activities since 2018.

She added that of the investigation papers opened, 104 were related to smuggling activities, which led to the arrest of 154 people and the prosecution of 54 cases.
