99 Kemas pre-schools in Terengganu affected by floods

KUALA NERUS: A total of 99 Community Development Department (Kemas) pre-schools in Terengganu have been affected by floods, with damages amounting to about RM1 million.

State Kemas director Dr Faridah Mat said a large part of the damages involved equipment, furniture and roofs which were blown away by high winds.

He said there were a total of 2,500 students and 300 employees in Kemas pre-schools in the eight districts in the state.

"A report on the damages to these pre-schools has been sent to the Rural and Regional Development Ministry for evaluation and further action.

"Most of the (damaged) premises were in Besut, Hulu Terenggany, Setiu and Kuala Merus," she said.

Faridah was speaking when met at a Ihsan Madani Squad gotong-royong at the Kemas pre-school in Batu Rakit.

She said lessons were still being carried out at the pre-schools to ensure that the children were not left behind, adding that 100 ministry employees were sent to help with clean-up and repair works at premises.

"We have had to place 22 of the children in the Batu Rakit pre-school in the one in Tanjung, some 6km away, because the one here is quite badly damaged.

"Unfortunately, this has caused some difficulty for the parents as its the rainy season and most of them only own motorcycles," she said.
