PAAB to build two water treatment plants in Seberang Prai next year

GEORGE TOWN: Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB), a wholly owned company of the Minister of Finance Incorporated, will collaborate with the Penang government to build two new water treatment plants in Seberang Prai.

The two water treatment plants will increase treated water reserve supply margins in the district.

The project involves the construction of the Sungai Prai Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Seberang Prai Tengah with a capacity of 136 million litres of water per day (MLD).

Another project involves the construction of the Sungai Muda WTP in Seberang Prai Utara with a capacity of 114 MLD.

PAAB said in a press statement today that once completed, a 15 per cent of treated water reserve supply margin could be achieved and maintained in Penang.

"This will be able to cope with high consumer demand in Seberang Prai Tengah and Seberang Prai Utara to support development needs."

Earlier today, PAAB paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at Komtar here.

Present were PAAB chairman Datuk Seri Jaseni Maidinsa, chief executive officer Zulkiflee Omar and chief financial officer Zaleha Abdul Hamid.

In a meeting held at the Chief Miniter's Office, PAAB presented the details, its roles and responsibilities as a company appointed by the federal government to provide facilitation funds in implementing water infrastructure development projects not only in Penang, but also in states that are part of the National Water Services Industry Restructuring Plan.

PAAB was established in 2006 under the Water Services Industry Act 2006 and is regulated by the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry and the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) to assist the federal government in carrying out the National Water Services Industry Restructuring Plan.
