KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has dismissed rumours circulating on social media about senior citizens being required to undergo competency and health assessments before renewing their driving licence.
RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, in a statement, said neither the Transport Ministry nor the department had imposed any such additional requirements.
"The process for senior citizens to renew their driving licence remains subject to the existing conditions and standard operating procedures under the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
"The public is advised to refrain from spreading false information and verify the accuracy of any information before sharing it."
Aedy added that the department remained committed to safeguarding public wellbeing.
For accurate information on driving licence renewal, the public is encouraged to visit the RTD website at www.jpj.gov.my.
Meanwhile, experts have suggested that road accidents involving elderly drivers could be reduced if additional conditions, including health checks, were required for licence renewal.
The Transport Ministry has said it would review a proposal to require Malaysians aged 65 and above to undergo competency and health assessments before renewing their driving licences.
