Malaysia to translate works of renowned Turkmen poet into Malay

PUTRAJAYA: The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) will translate several works by Turkmenistan's renowned poet, Magtymguly Pyragy, into the Malay language, announced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

At a joint press conference following bilateral talks with Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedow today, Anwar highlighted that Pyragy is celebrated for his works, which reflect a steadfast commitment to justice, peace, and the fight against greed and abuse of power.

"In order to reciprocate and demonstrate our admiration for the great country, its leadership, and the people, we would also like to extend our understanding and appreciation to their esteemed literary figure," he said.

"Pyragy, who is now celebrating his 300th anniversary, is not only a prominent poet in Turkmenistan but also well known internationally."

"I am pleased to announce that DBP has agreed to translate several of his notable works into Malay, so that they may be widely appreciated here," Anwar continued.

Pyragy was an 18th-century poet and philosopher from Turkmenistan, often considered the national poet of Turkmenistan and a central figure in Turkmen literature.

Anwar also said that DBP's efforts carry great significance for fostering comprehensive cooperation among Muslim nations, particularly in their shared commitment to development and peace.

"I am also impressed by the President's (Berdimuhamedow) focus, not only on enhancing trade and investment between our countries, but also on his broad vision of development, which includes the cultural sphere and his promotion of international peace—an initiative we fully support," Anwar said.

Meanwhile, in a joint statement released after their meeting, both leaders emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas such as transportation, culture, education, tourism, and sports. They agreed that these efforts would contribute positively to deepening the relationship between Malaysia and Turkmenistan.
