KUALA LUMPUR: As 2024 draws to a close, Malaysians are reflecting on the events that shaped their lives this year, while sharing hopes for a brighter future.
The New Straits Times spoke to citizens from various walks of life about their experiences and aspirations.
University student Munira Roserizal expressed gratitude for the peace in Malaysia, contrasting it with ongoing conflicts worldwide.
"As Malaysians, we are fortunate to live in harmony, while many elsewhere are deprived of basic human rights," she said, adding that she hopes for more inclusive government policies to ensure equal benefits for all, regardless of income.
Fellow student Ismaliana Ja'afar commented on rising social issues, referencing a recent altercation between rival football fans at a train station.
"In any competition or interaction with other countries, Malaysians must demonstrate good manners to prevent controversies," she said, wishing for greater unity and peaceful conflict resolution among citizens.
Marketing manager Mohd Shahrul Azmi faced economic uncertainties in 2024, with inflation impacting his daily life.
Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic, noting gradual economic recovery.
He was particularly moved by media coverage of the conflict in Gaza, which reshaped his perspective on humanity.
"The news made me more open-minded and strengthened my bond with my family," he said.
Civil servant Kanageswary Marimutuh described 2024 as a positive year, citing the 15 per cent salary hike announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
"Prime Minister Anwar has done so much for civil servants, and I'm truly grateful. I hope 2025 will be prosperous for all Malaysians," she said.
Chemist Lee Sueyin voiced similar hopes for economic improvement, urging the government to address livelihood issues for all income groups.
"Whether it's the M40, B40, or T40 groups, the government should ensure equal support for everyone," she said.
As the year ends, Malaysians continue to look forward to a united, prosperous, and inclusive future.
