KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian chemist Dr Raja Subramanian has been appointed as an expert to the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
In a statement today, the Foreign Ministry said Raja, who is the undersecretary of the Malaysian National Authority for the Chemical Weapons Convention (NACWC), is among seven experts appointed from the Asian region to the SAB.
"He will commence his term as an expert to the SAB from Jan 1, 2025, to Dec 31, 2027," the statement read.
The ministry added that Raja has over 23 years of specialised expertise in chemical weapons-related matters.
"He also holds a doctorate in chemical weapons analysis from the National Swedish Chemical, Biological, Radioactive, and Nuclear (CBRN) Defence Research Institute," the ministry said.
The SAB comprises 25 independent experts from OPCW member states, who serve in their personal capacity, providing specialised advice to the OPCW director-general, based in The Hague, on scientific and technological developments relevant to the implementation of the United Nations Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
"The ministry expresses its appreciation to the director-general of the OPCW and the international community for their confidence in Malaysia's commitment to global efforts in eliminating chemical weapons."
