RANTAU PANJANG: Newly-appointed Energy Commission (ST) chairman Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar has pledged to prioritise renewable energy in Malaysia's pursuit of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Shamsul Azri emphasised the importance of sustainability, particularly as Malaysia prepares to host key Asean meetings focused on energy and environmental issues.
"As the new chairman of the Energy Commission, I will ensure the government's net-zero emissions target Is achieved, with a strong focus on renewable energy," he said during a press conference after distributing Northeast Monsoon aid to flood victims at SK Rantau Panjang 2.
Shamsul Azri, who also serves as the Chief Secretary to the Government, said initiatives such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) were critical steps toward achieving a more sustainable energy future.
In June, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to increasing renewable energy in the power sector, aiming to boost its share from 25 per cent to 70 per cent by 2050.
Shamsul Azri also approved a RM10,000 donation to support audio-visual needs at SK Rantau Panjang 2 during the event.
Also present were Kelantan State Federal Development director Jasri Kasim and Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat.
