KUALA LUMPUR: It is difficult to identify vehicle parts rented for inspection, like tires, brakes or brake pads, as they can be generic.
Puspakom said difficulty detecting rented parts made it harder to pinpoint damage or performance issues.
"We may not be able to detect some issues because rented parts, like tires, brakes or brake pads, are quite generic.
"For instance, when we inspect tires, if the damage is in the axle (brake system), we can't check those areas.
"When inspecting brake performance, we focus on the efficiency of the brakes and the performance of the tires."
Puspakom said it was actively working with regulators and the Transport Ministry to improve the inspection processes.
"This will further enhance our processes and lead to more accurate and precise inspections. This will include the use of technology.
"We hope future advancements will allow for even more detailed inspections to ensure the highest standards of vehicle safety."
It was reported that the Road Transport Department and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry plan to crack down on "cosmetic agents" offering services like tyre rentals for heavy vehicles to pass Puspakom inspections.
RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the department would work with the ministry to address the issue.
"This is a dangerous scam because they use rented tyres in good condition for Puspakom inspections, but the vehicle's actual tyres are worn out.
"But RTD has no authority to enter these premises, so we will discuss this with the ministry.
"I will meet the ministry's director-general of enforcement, Datuk Azman Adam, in the next week or two to examine the issue thoroughly for further action as it involves public safety."
Earlier today, Azman said he would meet RTD next week to discuss the matter.
He declined to share details of the discussion until the meeting took place.
