Najib's house arrest appeal tomorrow attracts local, international media coverage

KUALA LUMPUR: The Court of Appeal hearing on Datuk Seri Najib Razak's appeal regarding his house arrest tomorrow has garnered significant interest and attention from both local and international media.

Representatives from more than 40 local and international media outlets, including the New Straits Times, are expected to descend on the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya near here to provide updates on the hearing involving the incarcerated former prime minister.

The Attorney-General's Chambers, in a statement on Dec 9 last year, had said that the Court of Appeal will hear Najib's appeal regarding his house arrest on Jan 6.

The hearing will also include Najib's application for leave to adduce new evidence.

The former prime minister is appealing the High Court's dismissal of his application for leave to commence a judicial review regarding an alleged addendum.

The addendum, purportedly issued by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, would allow Najib to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.

The former Pekan member of parliament also filed a new application seeking the court's permission to present additional evidence to prove the existence of a supplementary order.

Bernama reported that the hearing tomorrow will start at 9am before a three-member bench comprising Justices Datuk Azizah Nawawi, Datuk Azhahari Kamal and Datuk Seri Mohd Firuz Jaffril.

Meanwhile, police are stepping up preparations ahead of the "Solidarity with Datuk Seri Najib Razak" rally, which will take place in front of the Palace of Justice.

City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said police have deployed its men starting from midnight until the day of the rally to manage traffic.

Earlier today, Putrajaya police issued a stern warning against those planning to take part in the rally.

Its police chief Assistant Commissioner Aidi Sham Mohamed said the rally has not received permission from the landowner, thus failing to comply with the conditions under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

As such, Aidi Sham said the police would take strict action against anyone participating in the rally as it violates existing laws.
